Grades of Wood
Our Blanks are graded based on common standards found among most gunstock sellers.
Grades are usually based on the amount of figure and beauty. The trick is finding the
beauty and grain correctly laid out in a blank. This combination must be present
to insure a strong functional stock. Grain patterns play an important role in the
selection of a stock. All these factors contribute to the grade of the stock.
Overall, we try to be accurate as possible in the grading and pricing of our blanks.
Price is affected by supply and demand. As each year passes, the demand
for high grade wood exceeds the supply.
EXHIBITION - Blanks are the best available, they will possess all of the
desirable characteristics coveted for fine firearms. Each will make a stock of
exceptional beauty. Feather, fiddle or marbling throughout the butt of the stock.
The best blanks in this category may display curling feather on both sides or
the combination of other wildy gorgeous grain patterns. These blanks are very rare
and are priced from $250 - $500.
EXTRA-FANCY - Blanks will have more of the desirable characteristics either singley
or in combination. This grade will have fiddle, feather or marbling on both sides
or exceptional beauty throughout the stock with rare colors. Priced up to $250.
FANCY - Blanks in this grade are probably the best value for cost versus character,
with the top blanks making very beautiful stocks. Some very nice figure
and beautiful patterns.
MEDIUM - Blanks are a cut above what is found on most factory firearms. It can exhibit
either figure, color contrast, or exceptional texture, or a combination to make this grade.
STANDARD - Blanks are utility wood, several steps up from what is commonly
found on factory guns. For texture and density it is similar to the higher grades
but is graded lower due to some characteristic. It usually has less contrast and
color, but will still make an attractive and entirely usable stock.
